The one-time Synagogue
The
building could be the museum of those scattering after the demolition of
"The Synagogue". Since, as early as the 12th century, a Jewish community
was established here. It could be the museum of those who were expelled
from here by János Corvin. The memorial of those who - with their talent
and work - contributed to the development of our town in the second half
of the 19th century. Of those who managed to to build their new house of
worship, It could treasure the memory of six hundered victims of the Holocaust
in Tata. It could be a worthy mausoleum of the mother whose new-born baby
twins were flung to the wagon, as if they had been unwanted kittens.
However, we do not like to recall horrors.
So we have crowded the deserted synagogue with the plaster casts of the
Eternal Beauty: with the sculptures of Aphrodite, Hermes, Venus and the
Laokoon group.
If the one-time owners could somehow catch sight of the eyes of the children
moved by Pallas Athene's magnificence, they would probably accept the new
function of their synagogue.
